Even Justin Bieber’s Spotify-gaming fans can’t unseat Dance Monkey as the world’s favorite song

For those interested in eye-catching headlines, this is the biggest news for streaming music of the week: Justin Bieber has just re-posted (then removed) a manual instructing his fans to play Spotify to give his new song, Yummy, the best chance of topping charts.

And yet the biggest news for streaming music of the week is actually the same as last week and the week before and many weeks before that.

(Dance Monkey was previously a regional number 1 in countries such as Canada, the UK, France, Germany and Sweden – but the post-peak streaming popularity in these markets seems to be offset worldwide by the increase in the number of Spotify games in other countries, such as The United States.)


To date, according to Spotify, Dance Monkey has collected 894.5m of eligible streams in its service (excluding a further 9.6m for a stripped-down version of the course).

With the current daily streaming speed, the number is on track to surpass one billion Spotify streams in the next three weeks.

A billion streams would probably mean that Dance Monkey alone had generated more than $ 4 million on Spotify for Tones & I and its registered partners with rights.

As Tones co-manager David Morgan told MBW in November: "We jump out of bed every day: what's in the inbox? What will happen next? It's extremely humiliating to see that this can happen to someone who is literally on working on the street and living out of her van, and then, just months later, she has the largest number in the world.

"We have the privilege of being involved and we are extremely proud of what happened."
